Colour
The colours of the German Wirehaired Pointer can be Brown Roan (the primary colour) (ticked or spotted) or Solid Brown with a brown nose. (Solid brown is not the primary colour.) Roan is the main colour and the brown should be dark not light. They can also be Black Roan (ticked or spotted) with a black nose.
Grooming
The coat of the German Wirehaired Pointer is naturally short (around 2 cm) and with the addition of a beard and brow. Grooming is not really required if the coat is correct and they just need a bath to keep the coat clean. Plucking of dead hair at end of weather season twice a year is all the grooming they should require. The coat is water repellant and should feel fairly rough to the touch.
History
The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in the early 1900s as a hunting dog. It was developed by crossing a number of other pointer species to produce the breed we recognise today. It is still a very popular hunting dog, especially in it's native Germany.
Positives
The German Wirehaired Pointer is a great family dog, and will act as a watch dog for the home. He loves to play with children and to go on long walks.
Negatives
The German Wirehaired Pointer requires substantial exercise, so is not suited to a backyard lifestyle unless such exercise is provided.
